Roos is een van de bekendste ingrediënten in de parfumerie. Daarnaast is het een ingrediënt met een rijke geschiedenis. Maar wanneer we aan roos denken, denken we al gauw aan rozenblaadjes. Echter wordt er ook steeds vaker rozenhout gebruikt.
Rozenhout is de verzamelnaam voor verscheidene naar rozen ruikende houtsoorten, afkomstig van bomen uit verschillende geslachten. Bekend als Braziliaans Rozenhout zijn, Aniba duckei, Aniba parviflora en Aniba rosaeodora var. Amazonica, deze laatste komt hoofdzakelijk voor in Brazilië (Amazonegebied) en Peru.
De Aniba rosaeodora is een tropische boom met een roodachtige bast en gele of roze bloemen, behorend tot de Laurierachtigen, die in Mexico en Guyana voorkomt en de leverancier is van het zogenaamde citroenhout (bois de rose).
Door overmatig kappen zijn de oude boombestanden in het Amazonegebied bijna verdwenen. In Mexico zijn daarom plantages aangelegd voor de productie van etherische olie, maar het hout kan pas na 40 jaar voor de productie van olie benut worden.
De etherische olie wordt gewonnen door het destilleren van houtsnippers. 100 kilo hout levert 1 kilo olie. Een gelijkwaardige olie wordt eveneens gewonnen uit de Dalbergia sissoo uit India.
Rozenhoutolie heeft een roosachtige geur en is heerlijk om bijvoorbeeld het huis te parfumeren dit kan met een room diffuser. De verzachtende werking van de Rozenhoutolie maakt mensen meer ontvankelijk voor het genieten van alle mooie dingen om hen heen en heeft een harmoniserende en ontspannende werking op de geest. Traditioneel wordt de etherische olie dan ook gebruikt om stress af te bouwen en het immuunsysteem te stimuleren.
