Pluvia Sacra is the eleventh fragrance composed by Antonio Alessandria for his eponymous line. The inspiration comes from a beautiful story mixing history and legend.
In the year 1540, a sculptor, Giovanni Antonio Matinati, was transporting one of his works, a wooden crucifix, towards the heart of Sicily. As night fell, he sought shelter on Mount Etna in a village along his route, Randazzo. After the night passed, the day seemed promising, and the sculptor decided to set off towards his destination. However, just as he was about to leave, a strong storm broke out from nowhere, so the artist did not begin his journey. Mysteriously, the same event occurred for three consecutive days.
The people of Randazzo interpreted this as a divine sign and decided to purchase the crucifix to keep it in a church, where it remains to this days. Although the crucifix was crafted with meticulous anatomical accuracy (emaciated ribs, relaxed abdomen, suffering face), it is said to offer great comfort to those who venerate it.
The fragrance is inspired by the wood, the material of the sculpture, and the rain, the central element of the legend. This atmospheric phenomenon, in many cultures and various religions, is a symbol of purification, renewal, and fertility. When raindrops touch the earth, they bring with them the promise of new life, nourishing the fields and filling the rivers. This natural event can be interpreted as a sign that, after life’s storms, there is always hope for a new beginning. Additionally, the rain connects the sky with the earth, just as a fragrance, floating in the air, manages to link the earth with the heavens. Both serve as instruments of communication between the human and the divine.
